Tuesday Social special activities for August

Brightest Of Greetings, Most Glorious, Upon The Barony Of Dragon’s Laire!

Click here if you need the address — or other details about our weekly gatherings and martial practices. All martial activities are on their SUMMER schedule — this means that Heavy/Armored Combat, Rapier, and Thrown Weapons will practice on Tuesday, alongside the Social. Archery practice will be held on Wednesday evenings.

Looking for a camping event in August? Our neighboring baronies of Blatha an Oir (Tacoma) and Glymm Mere (Olympia) are, once again, hosting back-to-back events where you can leave your encampment up all week! Look for info about Prelude to War (Kingdom calendar, Facebook event) on August 11–16th + Autumn War (Kingdom calendar, Facebook event) on August 16–21.

DateWhat’s happening at Dragon’s Laire’s Tuesday Social?
August 1VFW Hall closed — no social!
August 8Baronial Business Meeting – starts at 6:30pm. These meetings are open to anyone and are a good source of information about what is happening in the Barony.
August 15Class: Introduction To SCA Etiquette at 6:30pm – by Countess Elisabeth de Rossignol. “This will be an introduction to how we address people in the SCA, how to make an introduction, what to do if you get called up in court, and generally how we interact with each other in both formal and informal situations. This is aimed mostly at newer folk but anyone is welcome to attend.”
Helpful resources: the SCA Newcomer’s Guide section on Awards & Titles (link to PDF) and the SCA College of Arms’ List of Alternate Titles (link to webpage).

Meeting: Harvest Feast planning at 6:30pm (brief meeting)
August 22Games night! featuring European Chess. Lucy (blare of kazoos) Games Minister of mighty Dragon’s Laire (another blare of kazoos), is hoping to bring a different game for us to learn every month.
August 29Class: How To Read A Medieval Recipe at 6:30pm – taught by HL Rycheza z Polksa. “Tips and tricks for transporting recipes from parchment to plate, emphasis on understanding the written recipe. We will briefly cover the history of recipe formatting and discuss where to find period recipes, decipher unfamiliar terms, how to evaluate research materials, finding unfamiliar ingredients, and tips on recording your culinary experimentation. We will provide example recipes for practice or participants are encouraged to bring recipes needing clarification. Research materials from my library will be available for perusal.”

Other upcoming classes: HE Gaius Veturius Scaevola is putting together a class on the construction of wooden boxes — very useful within the SCA.

Reminder: The Baronial Chatelaine, Halldora Bjorn heraldic device for Halldora Bjorn is looking for people from Dragon’s Laire to give short lectures and vignettes on various subjects of the SCA. “I’m basically looking for an extension of what we have on display at June Faire (costume making, cooking info, weaving, spinning, metal work, archery equipment, etc).” She is envisioning 15-min talks, just enough to give new members an introduction. If you are available and willing to give a short presentation, please contact DragonsLaire.Chatelaine@AnTir.org .

If you have a topic of special interest to you, please reach out to Master Arontius at DragonsLaire.ArtNSci@AnTir.org , and he’ll see what he can do to get it covered by a knowledgeable speaker. He is especially looking for Introductory Classes for those just joining the Baronial Family. Please volunteer to teach! We would appreciate multiple perspectives, and multiple generations, in the imparting of knowledge and passion.
Thank You!
